When I graduated from college more than 30 years ago, there were no personal computers and no internet. Yet I have spent the last three decades in the media. I’ve quietly picked up things along the way, taken crash courses online.
But this Master’s is for me, my opportunity to discover the best me that exists. I believe very much in destiny—the fact that God has placed each of us on this earth, in our family, in our neighborhoods, jobs, classes—on purpose with purpose. This Masters in Media Design is about re-discovering my purpose.
I graduated with a B.A. in Journalism and worked as a copywriter for 9 years at Young & Rubicam. Those were very exciting years when I lived the dream in New York City. I traveled to a lot of places, worked with a lot of important people and clients like Colgate-Palmolive, U.S. Army, U.S. Postal Service, KFC, Kraft General Foods, United Negro College Fund.
At the end of that time however, I felt the need to do something even more important…something eternal. So with the encouragement of my Pastor, I came on staff at my church, Word of Life Ministries as media director. After that, I launched my own graphic design business, dotBatts Designs.
On a whim one day, I clicked on an email from Full Sail University and decided to apply. At 53 years old, I feel like I need a re-boot, a new start, a fresh opportunity to discover my purpose and my place in this world. That is admittedly a tall order for a Master’s program. I don’t expect a spiritual experience. However, I do expect that God will use this experience as an opportunity for professional, personal and social growth.
I work alone. My Mac is my only collaborator. This is a chance to hear from other people, experts in my field who will help me dig deep and discover my best. I don’t think the world has seen it yet. And they need to!
