My name is Dorothy Batts and I am presently working toward a Master’s degree in Media Design. I was born and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, though I have lived in both southwest Florida and Long Island, New York (where I presently reside).
This is my second stop in New York, however. The first time I lived here, I was fresh out of college with a B.A. in Journalism and a new job at Young & Rubicam, one of the top advertising agencies in the business. When I graduated from college more than 30 years ago, there were no personal computers or internet. I remember writing term papers in a computer lab on one of those boxy Apple computers alongside dozens of other students.
Much has changed in three decades, both technologically and personally. Through a long succession of events, I have since transformed from an advertising copywriter to a self-employed graphic designer.
My goal in pursuing a Master’s degree in Media Design is to become the best that I can be at my craft. I admit that I don’t know what my personal best is, but my desire is to offer my clients media productions that are well-branded, well-planned and exceptional in quality—print, radio, television and social media. I also want to learn from media professionals who can mentor me in Media Design and offer insight that I have not yet attained.
